jel ford kicks off his return ep with two tracks of clean big room techno. the title track backyard is a moody affair with a low drone throughout that is complimented with layered synth stabs. using reverb to create atmosphere within the track it subtly breaks down before a vocal hook transcends the track to deliver a killer blow. meeting of minds is dubbier and uses a tripped out synth to add rhythm whilst working alongside a synth pattern to keep the track chugging along. the slow evolving pads add texture and keep the track nicely filled out whilst this timeless classic keeps on giving.

producer and boss of mathematics records, jamal moss a.k.a hieroglyphic being is a one-off musical explorer. jamals music takes cues from the ebm and house that played a huge part in the city s musical underground in the late eighties and early nineties, notably ron hardy and adonis, but also industrial, avant-jazz and noise. his tireless schedule of rough low-key releases over the last 12 years and his intense, very physical, psychedelic music, have made him a key exponent or maybe even a pioneer of what has recently come to be named outsider house, although he prefers the more sun-ra like descriptors of rhythmic cubism and cosmic be-bop.

as one of the more distinctive minimal house operators in these times, ion ludwig makes for a snug fit over at trelik towers, and with this three tracker its not hard to see why his records vanish quicker than you can say baby ford. 46 lj + felix ballad is a refined groover with a fine balance between gritty low end chunk and gossamer top-end, working subtle hits of bass and illustrious string sweeps into the mix to great effect. em carpet meanwhile darts out into more obscure territory, keeping the beats to a minimum and focusing on warm and fuzzy synth tones cycling

fernandos debut for leng was the universally well received mid-tempo monster *blue impala*. now he is back with yet another hypnotic bass heavy workout. *giant desert* takes the same low slung approach with some heavy guitar work from fiorucci. this is really is chugging music at its best, with flashes of vocal, analog synths and a dirty rock guitar combining to keep that head nodding. the extended dub allows fiorucci more space to hit the groove and the guitar work becomes epic.

a twenty year break away from making music is almost unheard of especially within electronic music circles, but that is where antenna happy finds himself with pinto. clocking in at 9.09 pinto draws from psychedelia and techno set straight for the sun. this kaleidoscopic sonic excursion has all the makings of a cult classic, and heads up the debut 12- release on newly founded imprint reinhardt records. taking lead on the b-side an entirely different affair in the shape of fallen. this is benchmark electronic music, as arpeggiators take flight mirrored against hypnotic acid bass, for a journey into the outer house territories. closing the ep, spark holds the reigns. conceived within the same stretch as pinto, however it wasn t until some months later that spark took on its full form. emotive modular synths lay the groundwork, connecting the dots between low-slung techno and house music, culminating in a track that sits in neither genre camp. spark will appear on the digital release only. the ep title track takes its name and inspiration from paintings by antenna happy s three-year-old daughter, whose birth inspired him to return to making music. close-ups of these paintings can be seen in the artwork for the release.

steve frisco, of serie limitee fame, brings us the latest bundle of hot tracks to hit wax classic in 2014. as the title suggests, steve takes us on a journey through low fidelity sounds and production techniques. think dark, moody, yet crunchy basement house tracks with inspiration taken from all over the u.s and the rest of the house world. it�s a generous offering as well. six whole dusty tunes for those diggers who are looking for something with a bit more range than another record of generic piano laden, house-by-numbers pieces that still seem to be flooding the record store shelves in 2014. the moods do vary from track to track, but they remain very reflective and almost melancholic at points. the title track, �adventure in lo-fi�, is the deepest of the lot with filtered chords, echoing claps and a sporadic kick pattern that often clears way for the track�s bass hits. now, compare that to �da brooklyn beat�. whilst the former had a distinct sunrise/sunset kind of feel to it, the latter is definitely more of a club affair. skippy snare hits and a strong organ lead the track on, and at the risk of utilizing very overused buzzwords such as �raw� and �ruff�, this track, and the rest of the a-side for that matter, certainly captures that essence. stalwart wax classic fans will no doubt be picking this one up to add to their collection. however, i strongly recommend this ep as a jumping in point to the label for any newcomers out there
